Acorns School had much to celebrate earlier this year. As well as the opening of a new ‘satellite’ site called Acorns Ashley, its Year 11 leavers had gained fantastic qualifications and 100% of them moved on to positive destinations.
Across its leavers, the school saw two young people achieve no fewer than six GCSEs each. One of those young people gained eight qualifications overall (alongside their GCSEs, they also gained functional skills qualifications).
There was a particular reason to celebrate for one young person. Previously unable to read or write, the young person experienced a range of challenges including ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia, and is also autistic.
Through the school’s careful and consistent support, this young person sat 14 exams in different subjects including an English exam which saw him having to concentrate for 2 and a half hours.
Head Teacher Chris Hampton said: “All of the young people did brilliantly well and this young person in particular just ‘smashed’ it! He has been on quite the journey and to see him tackle these exams and gain so many qualifications, well, it’s safe to say, we’re incredibly proud!
“We are, of course, so proud of all of the young people and thrilled that all of them who left us at the end of the summer term have gone on to positive destinations. Over the years we’ve seen young people go on to apprenticeships, further education, and careers. We love it when they come back to tell us how they’re doing and share their successes, as so many of them do.”
