A CARE worker’s fight against cancer has inspired a group of young people to raise more than £1,300 for charity.
Young people who live at Fairholme, a residential children’s home in Wisbech which is part of Keys, decided to raise funds in aid of prostate cancer research after learning a much loved staff member was battling the disease.
Matthew Battson, has been a Senior Support Worker at Fairholme for more than 10 years. When the three young people who live at the home heard he had prostate cancer and was receiving treatment, they approached the home’s Manager with a fundraising idea.
Collectively across the home, colleagues and young people joined together to be sponsored to walk 11,000 steps a day. They also held a raffle and other fundraising efforts including ‘guess the number of sweets in a jar’.
The home’s Manager Zoe Hopkin said: “Matt is very well-known and very well liked here at Fairholme and everyone wanted to do something to raise money for prostate cancer research.
“The walk was fantastic and everyone really played their part in helping us reach our targets – particularly our colleague Carol who was smashing 22,000 steps a day; she put us all to shame!
“We were delighted to raise such a good amount. We would also like to thank Keys who contributed £500 to the total. We’re only a small home and to raise this total is a great achievement for the young people and team.”
Fairholme is part of Keys, a provider of residential children’s homes and specialist schools across England and Wales.
