For some young people, exam results and qualifications are the key focus, and measure people use of their success – or otherwise.
But for many of the young people supported in a Keys Group school, while exam results are important, they’re is not necessarily the only important aspect of their educational journey. Their destination – or where they go to next after school – is also key and shows how far they’ve come.
In our schools, our children and young people have often faced significant challenges and often had extremely negative learning experiences. However, each year we see them succeeding on their own terms, and within the context of their own lives and journeys. This is shown by our destinations data.
This year, of our almost 150 Year 11 leavers, 97% have gone on to a confirmed positive destination. For some that’s college or further education, in both mainstream and specialist environments. Some already have a job or have taken up a place where they’ll be training or undertaking an apprenticeship. Some will complete courses which will set them up for a career in the military. That’s a huge achievement.
In terms of qualifications, 100% of our Year 11 leavers left with meaningful qualifications – whether that’s GCSEs, BTECs, Asdan or Functional Skills among others. They have had a grounding in the key subjects of maths, English and science. And, importantly, they learned a range of skills which will set them up for the next stage of their life journey.
Success is not just a set of qualifications. We look at where the young person started before we measure how far they have come. Through learning at one of our schools and securing a positive destination to move on to, they are taking the next step into their futures.
They are people employers want to employ, that teachers want to teach and we are very proud of them for making that often turbulent journey to the next steps in their future. Well done to all of them.
